✔️ History and tradition of Volterra’s Contrade
During the Middle Ages, the foreigners couldn’t enter the City of Volterra without paying a special “fee” called Gabella. This ancient custom lives again today with great suggestion of those who have the privilege to take part in this ceremony.
This special ritual is available for groups upon request of availability. After a private guided tour of the prestigious Palazzo dei Priori (seat of political power in Volterra), the participants will be welcomed as ancient foreigners by the highest offices of the old City: the Balitori (the politicians of that era), the Alfieri (the standard-bearers) and all the other characters belonging to medieval civil and political life.
A herald will announce the arrival of the Maggior Priore (the head of the council), everybody will stand up, the standard-bearers will show their flags: “Honor to the Lords of the City!” Drumroll… and the ceremony begins!
A unique Medieval Italy experience!
